Mersea Island Trust

Accommodation for the elderly and infirm

Help and Support

We have a small team of permanent wardens who are friendly and caring. Within  reasonable  limits the   wardens will  ensure the peace of mind of the residents, helping to overcome day to day problems and will usually visit each tenant once every day except on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

The Trust does not provide nursing care. The wardens will give emergency care only. Tenants are expected to look after themselves, with the assistance of relatives or carers.

There is a resident warden at Akhurst Court and a visiting warden at Mersea Court. Both wardens are  available via Colchester Helpline in an emergency.

Emergency help is immediately available by contacting Colchester Helpline to which all residents are connected. This service provides 24-hour assistance throughout the year. Residents are required to have their own private telephones in order that Helpline can be connected to them.

Living in sheltered accommodation has many advantages. All heating and lighting costs are covered in the rent which is paid weekly by standing order. You have your own front door and can live a completely independent life. Beyond that, if you wish, you can make friends with the other residents and there is the community lounge for social occasions in both courts. There is no need to be lonely but you are free to be perfectly private and self contained in your own flat if you wish.

You can apply for housing benefit from Colchester Borough Council to cover your rent and for assistance from Supporting People to cover the support charge.  The support charge is specifically for housing related support tasks which help you to be independent in your own home by providing a warden, helpline etc.

If none of those on the waiting list, living on Mersea Island, want accommodation those with relatives on Mersea Island have the next priority.

An application form is available on this website

If you wish to visit the Courts or would like more information, please complete the form or telephone the office, which is situated at Akhurst Court. We will be happy to help you.
